Names for Memory Foam:
- Viscoelastic foam
- Space-age foam
- Space-age memory foam
- Energy-absorbent foam
- Lazy foam
- Slow foam
History:
- Memory foam was originally developed for NASA in the early 1960s for application in astronaut suits.
How is memory foam different from ordinary foam?
- It is temperature-sensitive, pressure sensitive, breathable, and has been referred to as “lazy” or “slow” because it continually adjusts to the body's shape and weight, dramatically taking pressure off specific areas of the body.
- Because the contact area is increased with memory foam, it reduces the pressure felt.
Common Uses of Memory Foam:
- Memory foam mattresses are being used medically in hospital beds to help reduce the incidence of bedsores.
- It is used commonly for wheelchair seat cushions.
- Memory foam mattresses are also proving effective in burn units.
- In the home, memory foam mattresses have been found to minimize tossing and turning and the pain and discomfort stemming from impeded circulation and interrupted sleep.
Good memory foam must have the following characteristics:
- sufficient density to support the weight put on it--Toppers and mattresses should be made of memory foam of at least 2” - 2.5” thick and 5-6 lbs. density in order to perform well
- be made of 100% open cells
- be temperature sensitive
There are many manufacturers of memory foam the world over--What Makes Aquarius products different?
- In our clinical testing, some memory foams produced by other companies did not perform as well as expected
- We found that the higher the density the better the foam (density is equal to quality)
- Aquarius uses only high density memory foam
- In our mattresses and toppers we use 3” of memory foam with densities of 5.25 pounds or 6 pounds
- In our memory foam pillows, we use only 6 lbs. density
- All of our products are 100% Canadian-made.
